How to open a STEP file
- Click Open STEP Viewer.
- Drag & drop your
.stepor.stpfile into the viewer. - Rotate, zoom, and inspect your CAD model or assembly.
Tip: STEP files can be heavy (especially assemblies). If loading is slow, try exporting a simplified version or splitting large assemblies.
What is a STEP file?
STEP (ISO 10303) is a widely used CAD interchange format for exchanging precise 3D geometry between engineering tools. Unlike mesh formats (STL/OBJ), STEP typically stores boundary-representation (B-Rep) solids/surfaces and can include assemblies and metadata.
STEP tips for CAD sharing
Some STEP files contain full assemblies with many components. If you only need a single part, export that part to reduce size.
STEP is precise, but converting to a display mesh can take time. Simplify fillets/chamfers when sharing for faster viewing.
Depending on export settings, STEP may include colors/names. If they’re missing, re-export and enable appearance/metadata options.

FAQ
Is this STEP viewer free?
Yes — you can open and preview STEP/STP files directly in your browser for free.
What’s the difference between STEP and STL?
STEP is a CAD format that stores precise solids/surfaces and assemblies. STL is a triangle mesh format mainly used for 3D printing and typically doesn’t include CAD metadata.
Can STEP include assemblies?
Yes. STEP files can contain assemblies with multiple parts/components. Larger assemblies may take longer to load and tessellate for viewing.
Can I share a link to the STEP viewer?
Yes. Share the viewer URL after loading a model, or link to /3d-viewer?format=step.
