3D model of planet Mercury. Mercury is the smallest planet in our solar system and the one closest to the Sun, orbiting it once every 88 Earth days. It is a rocky world, only slightly larger than Earth’s Moon, with a heavily cratered gray surface that records billions of years of impacts. Because its atmosphere is extremely thin (an exosphere of atoms knocked off the surface), it cannot trap heat, so surface temperatures swing from about –180 °C at night to more than 430–450 °C during the day.
