  • Heart CFD Analysis: Mitral Valve's Role in Left Ventricular Wash-Out using Overset Meshes

Description:

This work discusses the hidden changes in cardiac blood flow that lead to cardiovascular disease. Patient-specific Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models, which go beyond regular medical imaging, offer valuable insights for early diagnosis and treatment planning. However, complex movement of the

left ventricle (LV) and the mitral valve (MV) challenges existing CFD methods. The text introduces a new Chimera-based approach using overset meshing to create a 3D CFD model of the beating LV with MV movement. Various simulations, including torsion, were conducted to study intracardiac flow. Results revealed the MV's crucial role in enhancing flow, washout, and jet propagation. Torsion's impact was limited on some factors but significant for particle residence time analysis. Despite challenges, the Chimera technique shows promise for 3D CFD heart models with valve motion.
