Numerical simulation of radial fans in pneumatic fertilizer spreaders

After experimentally validating the mathematical models of radial fans on a test bench, a simulation of an agricultural fertilizer spreader was conducted. The objective was to evaluate the air distribution behavior along the application nozzles and compare it with experimental results. The Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) approach was used to obtain a turbulent mean-field, employing the k-Epsilon turbulence model with two equations. The computational fluid dynamics software CFX 18.1 was utilized to solve the transport equations. Unstructured tetrahedral meshes generated by the ICEM CFD 18.1 software were employed in all models. The applied method proves to be suitable for reproducing the fluid dynamics of airflow in pneumatic systems of agricultural fertilizer spreaders, eliminating the need for physical prototypes.
