About the Vertical Axis Wind Turbine 2D Simulation Project
Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) consists of a main rotor shaft which is set transverse to the wind (but not essentially vertically) whereas the main components are placed at the base of the turbine. This allows the generator and gearbox to be located close to the ground, facilitating service and repair. Here simulation of flow through a rotating high solidity vertical axis wind turbine using OpenFOAM is shared. pimpleDyMFoam solver is used for the computation. The blade is operating at a tip speed ratio of 1.0. The blade cross section is based on NACA 0015 with a rotor solidity of 1.5. Based (mesh+case) on the work of Travis Carrigan (https://github.com/traviscarrigan/OpenFOAM-2D-VAWT). More simulations with varying parameters will follow shortly. Stay tuned!
